They eat whatever's found in the Food Nipple.

Reason why it's hard to see them talk like that is because their mandible guards are in the way. In the episode of the Duel you see Elites with the mandible guards and they're not talking almost like human when the uppers are closed. Just watch The Duel and you'll see clearly and understand how they are able to talk.
