Short hilt and long blade can be 1/6 the length of the blade, or even shorter (maybe 4-6" hilt (including pommel and guard), 36" blade). For a typical one-handed knightly sword, 6-7" hilt, 30-32" blade. For a typical hand-and-a-half longsword, 12" hilt, 36" blade.
