Yes. You can counter your own spell. Most counters don't require that an opponent's spells be the target.
Can you respond to your own spells?
Yes. Both players must consecutively pass priority while the stack is empty before the game can proceed to the next step. I am no longer on MTGS staff, so please don't contact me asking me to do staff things. :| Yes.
How do you counter a spell?
701.5a To counter a spell or ability means to cancel it, removing it from the stack. It doesn't resolve and none of its effects occur. A countered spell is put into its owner's graveyard. 701.5b The player who cast a countered spell or activated a countered ability doesn't get a “refund” of any costs that were paid.
Can you counter a spell already in play?
you can not cancel it, you can only cancel a spell on the stack (as it is the only place they exist), they are putting it from their hand right into play so it can't be countered.
Can you counter a spell that can't be countered?
Yes you can, since the targeting requirement for counter spells is just 'target spell' not 'target spell that can be countered'. When the counterspell goes to resolve it will do as much as possible, so it won't counter the spell but any other effects it would have (like Frightful Delusion's discard) will still happen.

When you cast a spell with split second, no one (including you) may cast another spell or activate a non-mana ability until that spell resolves. ... It makes counterspells irrelevant, since they can't be cast to counter those spells.

Yes. Unless otherwise specified, activated abilities can be played at any time you could play an instant (like, for example, in response to a spell that would destroy all creatures). You can sacrifice creatures before they're destroyed, which it sounds like you have time to do in that case.

Mana abilities can't be countered because they don't use the stack. They are played (or trigger when another mana ability is played) and immediately resolve.

In short I'd say 6-7 is ideal, so that you can draw into them when needed, and to answer other things. To help make the decision easier, look at counters that have other upside, (Cryptic Command, Mystic Confluence, etc.) so that the slot isn't just a counterspell. All-in-one counters like Disallow are great as well.
Is modern horizons modern legal?
The Modern Horizons 2 set becomes legal for sanctioned Constructed play on its official release date, Friday, June 18, 2021. At that time, it will be legal in Vintage, Legacy, Commander, and Modern. Cards printed in this set will not be legal in Standard.

Can you counter Krosan Grip?
For instance, Krosan Grip has split second, but with a successful Counterbalance flip, can be countered. Split second doesn't itself make the spell uncounterable, it just prevents the majority of ways the spell would be countered from happening (casting a counterspell, etc.)
Can you copy Krosan Grip?
As you suspect, this means its abilities are unaffected by split second. Also, the copy has split second, because Krosan Grip itself has split second. The split second mechanic only requires that the spell in question is on the stack; it doesn't matter whether it was cast or simply copied.
